How do I import transactions from a CSV?

If you are moving from another app or keep records in a spreadsheet, you can bring your transactions into Spendora as a CSV file. The import runs in stages — you choose a file, match its columns to Spendora's, then review everything before anything is saved.

Start with the template

Go to More → Data → Import Data. Before you upload anything, three things there are worth opening:

• Read me first (instructions) — how the import works, start to finish.

• Follow CSV example (reference) — a filled-in file showing what good rows look like.

• Populate CSV template (to upload) — an empty file with the right headers. Starting here is the easiest way to avoid problems.

There is also a CSV column guide on the same screen that lists every column and whether it is required.

Required columns

• date — the date of the transaction. Most formats are accepted, including ISO 8601, YYYY-MM-DD, DD/MM/YYYY and MM/DD/YYYY.

• name — a short description of the transaction.

• currency — must match the currency of the account you are importing into. Rows that don't match are flagged as errors.

• category — matched against your existing category names.

Each row also needs an amount, in either expense or income — one or the other, never both. Use a positive number in whichever column applies and leave the other blank.

Optional columns

• retailer — the merchant or store name.

• notes — any free-form notes.

• foreign_currency, foreign_expense and foreign_income — for spending made in a different currency from the account. Pair the amount with the currency.

Running the import

1. Go to More → Data → Import Data and choose your file.

2. Tap Continue, then match each column in your file to the matching Spendora column. If you used the template, this is usually already correct.

3. Review the preview. Any category names that didn't match one of yours need a choice here, and rows with problems — a currency that doesn't match the account, for instance — are flagged so you can fix them.

4. Confirm the import. Nothing is saved until this point.

If you are importing a large history, try a handful of rows first. Once you're happy with how they land, run the full file.
